Persuasive Essay Darfur Genocide

Persuasive Speech

Is genocide really just a topic you hear in history class? The Janjaweed crisis in Darfur clearly shows that genocide remains a reality even in the modern times of the 21st century. The governor of Sudan's disregard for its people has left the civilians of Darfur in a state of chaos that came to be classified as an international crisis, and it's the responsibility for the people of the world to provide assistance at such a time.

In 2003, the Sudanese government sent out the Janjaweed to retaliate back at the rebel groups (SLA and JEM), but refused to acknowledge and take responsibility for the acts of terrorism committed by the Janjaweed (unitedhumanrights.org). The Janjaweed abused the military power given to them to systematically displace and kill the Africans in Darfur, to end the long racial tension in their favor(unitedhumanrights.org). The actions of the Janjaweed have resulted in an estimate of 200 000- 400 000 deaths with 2.5 million people displaced, and majority of these victims were non-combatants (worldsavvy.org). They would also sometimes brand victims as examples to other people, just to add insult to injury (Levy). Many innocent civilians are being targeted and terrorized for their African background, which shows that the Janjaweed have strayed from the original orders, using their power for their own personal goals and entertainment. The corrupt government of Sudan is reluctant to find a means of helping the issue, therefore failing to protect the people of Darfur. On June 2005, the International Crime Court takes action to end the crisis by launching investigations into the violation of human rights in Darfur, but the government of Sudan refused to cooperate with the investigation (unitedhumanrights.org). The Sudanese government's refusal of aid reveals the dark intentions of the government to use the Janjaweed, by supplying them, to eliminate the Africans while avoiding blame. Some people may say that the situation cannot be classified as big as "genocide", since it is the elimination of a race; the Sudanese government is only using them to target the rebels as a retaliation (Michael). A victim confessed about how the Janjaweed were shouting out racial slurs and declaring claims of how the land belonged to "Arabs" not to "Africans", while killing civilians. Through the words of the Janjaweed soldiers it is clear to see their racism towards Africans,  and since the Sudanese government continues to support them, it implies a relation between the two. It is evident that the cause behind the genocide issue in Darfur is the corrupt government that empowers the Janjaweed through the military to deal with a racial conflict with the Africans.

We have a duty to show compassion towards those in need, just like how we would want help if ever in trouble, the same conditions apply. The lives of those who are in need can always be helped no matter how small or big the contribution, which means that the voice of everyone matters to help Darfur. The victims of the Darfur genocide are still people that are entitled to the same rights and freedom as you and I, but instead they are abused and hunted down in the "safety" of their homes. A rape victim of the incident said: "They were shouting and screaming at us. You know what they were saying? 'We have come here to kill you all! You are black slaves! You are worst than dogs!' The worst was that they were laughing and yelping with joy as they did those terrible things" (Tran). No one deserves to be abused and put through that kind of suffering, and it is not right on our part to keep quiet about this cruelty. As fellow humans we should treat each other the way we would want to be treated and protect the rights that everyone deserves, so that they too can experience the joy of living. Your voice on the issue can change the lives of the people in Darfur by influencing others of all stature to care enough about Darfur to take action. Due to the massive uproar about the Darfur genocide, it has influenced famous media faces such as Brad Pitt to start organizations to aid Darfur's citizens as well as make contributions as big as $500 000 to programs supporting their lives (Sandre). The crisis of Darfur has not been given enough light for everyone to see how truly horrible it is even to this day. There are still many refugees dying from the Janjaweed, but with enough people caring, the UN and other organizations will be push to take further actions to see to it that the issue is settle (e.g. send in more aid). You might be thinking that the voice and actions of an average person cannot truly change the outcome of such a massive issue, because they don't have enough money or power to affect it. The Eyes of Darfur is a project that uses a high resolution satellite to monitor the actions in Darfur, and it was made possible due to the funding by the Save Darfur Coalition (eyesondarfur.org). The Save Darfur Coalition is made up of 130 million people of all age and statues. This shows that no matter who you are, you can always help people in different ways such as donating to projects that support them (eyesondarfur.org). Therefore, you should definitely care about such a crisis because it is the right action to take towards those in need and your actions can well determine the fate of those victims.

The chaos in Darfur can be resolved with the UN taking more action towards changing the government of Sudan, and the cooperation of everyone contributing to aid Darfur to a full recovery. The UN' new secretary general, Ban Ki-moon needs to make the region of Darfur its top priority and send more force to counter the Janjaweed along with pressuring the Sudanese government to change. Reports showed a case where trucks carrying food aid to Darfur were assaulted and the foods and trucks were stolen, while half the UN soldiers that were sent to Sudan were providing security (Levy). Even while the UN soldiers were deployed, the Janjaweed still managed to steal from them fearlessly. This shows that the military force deployed by the UN is lacking in power and needs to be more aggressive if they truly want to see a change. The complete restoration of Darfur also requires the restoration of the villages and homes, which can be accomplished by donating to the reliable charities and organizations dedicated towards Darfur. A Turkish charity called "Kimse Yok Mu" was acknowledged on the news for extending a hand of help towards the people of Darfur by providing food for families, distributing aid packages, as well as building clinics (Celik). By donating to charities and organizations such as this and spreading awareness, you can help fund them to start many new projects to develop Darfur from its broken state. How would you know that the money donated to the charity will go directly to helping Darfur? There are some charities that take majority of the donations for the own company's profit and leave little for the actual crisis. Help Darfur Now is a non-profit organization that is committed to providing help to refugee camps, that ensures 98% of all proceeds goes towards that Darfur relief effort (helpdarfurnow.org). This is one of many sites that you can donate to that ensures that you are truly helping the people of Darfur with the amount of money you contribute. Only through the UN's acknowledgement of Darfur's importance and the many contributions to organizations and charities helping their progress, can Darfur be saved from its suffering.

It is the duty for us all to help out the victims of Darfur that are neglected by their own government and hunted by the Janjaweed. We have the ability to influence the people on the government level to stop it if we cared enough. The Sudanese government is looking past the cruel acts of the Janjaweed, leaving the Africans to die in the millions. We need to help these victims since we are all people and that no one deserves to be treated with such abuse, and our actions can change all that. This issue in Darfur can be resolved with the UN taking more action towards Darfur and everyone helping organizations redevelop Darfur. Genocide's terror has been recognized by the world ever since Adolf Hitler, and such acts should not be allowed to be continued no matter how small the situation. We have to learn from the mistakes of our past in order to improve the future towards a more humane society.
